Drawing & Painting

Ages 6–14

A structured, hands-on path through drawing and painting. Children start with simple shapes and build up, step by step, to watercolours, acrylics, landscapes and portraits of their own.

From first lines to finished paintings

Eight areas of learning, each building on the one before.

  1. Hand sketching simple pencil drawings in a spiral-bound sketchbook

    Basic Shapes & Sketching

Every drawing starts with simple shapes. Children learn to spot them in everything around them and sketch with confidence.

  2. Graphite pencil drawing of a shaded cylinder with a cast shadow, pencils and eraser beside it

    Pencil Shading Techniques

Light, shadow and texture with just a pencil — hatching, blending and making flat drawings look solid.

  3. Paintbrush mixing bright acrylic colours on a round terracotta palette

    Colour Theory & Blending

How colours mix, which ones work together, and how to blend smoothly from one to the next.

  4. Hand painting a soft green watercolour landscape with a flat brush

    Watercolour Painting

Washes, layers and soft edges — learning to let the water do some of the work.

  5. Young artist painting a purple and blue sky on a small canvas, surrounded by acrylic paint bottles and a palette

    Acrylic Painting

Bold colour on canvas, with brushwork that builds texture and depth.

  6. Artist painting a bright landscape of mountains, clouds and hills on a wooden easel outdoors

    Landscape Drawing

Skies, trees, hills and water — composing a scene with a foreground, a middle and a far distance.

  7. Hand drawing a pencil portrait sketch in a sketchbook

    Portrait Drawing

Faces and expressions, using the proportions that make a portrait look like a real person.

  8. Overhead view of four children painting with watercolours around a shared art table

    Creative Art Projects

Putting it all together in projects where each young artist brings their own ideas.

More than a pretty picture

Art is a skill, and skills grow with practice. Along the way, young artists work on:

Looking closely
Drawing trains the eye to notice shape, light and detail.
Steady hands
Pencil control and brushwork improve with every session.
A feel for colour
Mixing, matching and choosing colours on purpose.
Ideas of their own
Projects leave room for each child’s imagination.
